My Baby's First Birthday: Smiles and Laughs

Goldfields Girl with her baby at their Peter Rabbit first birthday party

Here is the next post on Roo’s first birthday. If you missed the first post with pictures of the table setting and amazing cake, you can view the post HERE

The theme was Peter Rabbit / Beatrix Potter inspired. We had originally planned to have a ‘wild’ theme but after much pinning on pinterest I realized my vision relied heavily on an outdoor location with autumn colours. The weather has been too unpredictable to have anything at a park and because of all the recent rain most parks are pretty and green. A Peter Rabbit theme would be better suited to the current spring colours. I reluctantly hosted the event at home hoping the weather would be warm enough to be outside under our pergola. It started out as a sunny day then clouded over and poured rain at the end of the party, phew!

Today’s pictures feature some of my crafting skills (with help from Finding Femme)  such as my DIY painted signs and the high chair I spent the week searching for at every opshop and antique place I could find within a 200km radius! After The Captain did an average spray paint of the chair I ended up calling in the expert. My brother, a graffiti artist, lectured us on my cheap choice of spray paint (turns out it’s not all the same apparently), use of nozzle and hand techniques before spraying it again for us!

As mentioned in my previous post - I gave up on the idea of baking the cake myself to instead put my limited time into other things such as decorating. This means I must also admit that the shabby chic smash cake was made by Pretty Special Cakes and not by me!

The decorations were sourced largely from my favourite boutique shops – you guessed it, Kmart and The Reject Shop! Call me frugal or call me tight, I take no offence. You shouldn’t need $$ to decorate a party if you have good style and a theme in mind (although when seeking professional services - you get what you pay for).

Roo gets no first birthday present from us after choosing to get a professional birthday cake made instead. Although I doubt missing out on a present from us given the mountain he ended up receiving will send him into counselling later on. As much as I thought I would be the one needing counselling over my guilt of not making the cake, I am pleasantly gratified knowing I have pulled off a gorgeous party on a budget and it has turned out just as pretty as a party I’d be spotting on the blog of one of the luxury mummy bloggers who would use anything from a private chef to a fashion stylist for their events.

I have listed all the styling details last with where I sourced objects or how I made them. If you have any questions just leave them in the comments sections at the bottom of the page.
